#22. Systems Series Part 2: Save Time With Session Planning

Whether you are a new speech-language pathologist (SLP) or a seasoned SLP, planning your treatment sessions can help save time and reduce feelings of confusion and overwhelm. However, as busy clinicians, we often get stuck in a pattern of rushing from one session to the next with very little thought about what goals we’re targeting and what materials we’re using to target them. The solution? A system for planning sessions.

Why You Need a System for Session Plans:

Regardless of your experience level, a structured plan for your sessions can be a game-changer. Ever find yourself pondering session activities while at home playing with your kids or running into a session unprepared? I’ve been there too, and it left me feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and ineffective as a therapist. Once I created a system for planning my sessions, I felt relaxed, prepared, and empowered.

The Essentials of a Session Plan:

Let's break down the key elements to include in your session plan:

  1. Current Goals: Clearly outline the client's target areas within your session plan. You can do this by copying and pasting the goals verbatim into your session or by simply writing down the skill or sills that you are focusing on. Your system, so you get to decide!

  2. Future Goals: Dedicate a section to jot down any unexpected areas of need that surface during sessions. These areas of need can become objective, measurable goals in the future. Doing this can also help you to remain focused within the session instead of chasing “shiny objects” or “goal hopping” without intention.

  3. Client's Interests: In your session plan, note your clients’ interests, hobbies, or preferred activities. This acts as a quick reference bank to maximize their engagement during sessions and provides backup activities if needed.

  4. Materials Needed: List the materials required for each session. This simple step saves time and eliminates last-minute rushes, ensuring you have everything ready beforehand.

  5. Future Plan Section: Document your plans for the following session within the current session plan. It's a strategic move that kick-starts your planning process for the next session, preventing that last-minute rush where you’re frantically grabbing materials as a session is about to start .

  6. (Bonus) Data Collection: Incorporating a section to track and record data within your session plan streamlines your note-taking process, ensuring you don't miss documenting crucial session information.

Tailoring Your Session Plan:

Making this system work for you is crucial. Consider your preferences, learning style, and work environment. For example, are you more inclined towards paper or digital formats? Your system should be simple, repeatable, and seamlessly integrated into your routine.
